Computer Diagnostics

Modern vehicles use computers to monitor the performance of the engine and other components. When something isn't up to par, today's automobiles alert you with a warning light. While most are self explanatory, like "Low Oil," some aren't as telling. When your check engine light comes on, for example, it's easy to become frustrated. Come in for a computer diagnostic the next time something is wrong with your vehicle.

Stop by our auto repair shop in Staten Island for your engine diagnostic or other computer diagnostic. We'll tell you what's wrong and work with you on your next steps to fix it.

Preventive Maintenance

Everything has a life expectancy, including every part that makes up your vehicle. The purpose of preventive maintenance is to help you get the longest safe, reliable usage out of your vehicle.

While preventive maintenance services might take up some of your time and cost a little money now, the pay-off for keeping up with your scheduled maintenance really does make it worth your while in the long run.

Preventive Maintenance Services

Below you'll find a list of popular preventive maintenance services that we perform and information on what the service entails.

  • Air Filter Replacement: Your gas or diesel engine needs air, specifically oxygen, to run. Before the air gets to your engine, however, it needs to be cleaned to prevent small debris and dirt from getting inside. Enter the air filter. Considering its rather important role, it makes sense to replace your air filter as needed. When exactly is needed? This depends on how heavy you drive your vehicle and how dusty or debris-ridden the outside air is. You can consult your owners manual to see the recommended time frame, and you can always have us check it out quick to see whether you're still good or not.
  • Fuel Injection: Your car's fuel injectors are responsible for spraying a mist of fuel for your engine to burn. Unfortunately, they tend to become dirty over time through normal use. A dirty fuel injection system can cause a loss in vehicle performance. Have your system and injectors checked to prevent misfires, poor acceleration, and rough idling.
  • Oil & Filter Change: Motor oil lubricates many different components in your vehicle, ensuring they don't cause damage, and your oil filter prevents any debris from causing trouble. Oil changes are a well known maintenance service that most drivers are familiar with and that most new cars indicate through a warning light. Come into New York Tire Company and Service Center for your next oil change and oil filter replacement.
  • Spring Checkup: During a spring checkup, your car is inspected to make sure it's ready for the hot summer months ahead. During this service, we'll check your battery (bad winters tend to shorten battery lifespans), see if you need to swap your winter tires, check your tire pressure, and give other important components an inspection to make sure you're good to go.
  • Winterization Checkup: If you've heard the phrase "winterizing your car," it refers to this service. Winter months and freezing temperatures can do a lot of damage on a vehicle. During a winterization checkup, we'll test your battery to determine it's chance of survival in the months ahead, see if you have snow tires installed, check the type of oil you have, and review other important components that could lead to trouble if left alone.
  • Mileage Service: To stay in warranty, most manufacturers require that you have your vehicle checked at different mileage intervals. Check out our more detailed preventive maintenance page to see popular intervals from 7,500 miles to 180,000 miles.

If you really want to get the most value out of your vehicle and safeguard against expensive repairs in the future, preventive maintenance is the way to go. Contact us to get started.

Heating & Cooling Systems

Why Should You Have A.C. Services Performed?

Like most aspects of car maintenance, treating a problem with your vehicle’s air conditioning system early can help prevent major repairs. For example, an air conditioning system operating on low refrigerant due to a leak will eventually damage the compressor. Replacing or repairing the compressor can be more expensive than sealing the leak and refilling the refrigerant.

Some symptoms to beware of regarding a faulty air conditioning system include an inoperative fan or blower, an unusual amount of noise during regular operation, and, of course, reduced cooling capability. Stale smelling air is another sign that something is wrong with your vehicle’s air conditioner. A clogged compressor, evaporator, or condenser can contribute to the failure of the AC system, as can clogged expansion valves. Routine maintenance is important and can help you avoid major AC repairs.

Heating System Services 101

In contrast to the cooling system, which removes heat from the engine, the heating system transfers the engine’s heat to the vehicle’s interior. Excess engine heat is absorbed by coolant, a mixture of water and antifreeze. Coolant is carried by the heater hoses from the engine to the radiator, which expels some of the heat into the atmosphere. The water pump pushes the coolant through the engine, cooling system, and heating system. The coolant travels to the heater core, located in your vehicle’s dashboard.

There, the heater fan directs the rest of the warm air into the vehicle’s cabin. Once the coolant transfers heat into the vehicle, the coolant returns to the water pump where it continues to circulate through the system. The heating and cooling systems share a number of components, including the radiator, thermostat, and water pump. Other heating system components include the blower motor, heater control valve, heater core, heater fan, and heater hoses. All these components work together to regulate temperatures in the engine and cabin compartment.
